Gallloway is a popular destination
for holidaymakers, anglers, walkers, mountain bikers or simply, people who wish to escape from the hustle and bustle of urban
living to one of the most beautiful, yet relatively undiscovered, corners of Scotland.
Craidghu Croft, just off the A747 coastal road between Glenluce and Whithorn, is just a
mile or so from Monreith Animal World and around 5 minutes from the former mediaeval city of Whithorn (population c.990),
the cradle of Christianity in Scotland.
The Whithorn
Visitor Trust charts the history of the town, a centre of pilgrimage for the Kings and Queens of Scotland for centuries. The
area is also rich in standing stones.
Nearby
Port William offers uninterrupted views over Luce Bay, known for some spectacular sunsets, whilst around 20 minutes away is
Wigtown, Scotland’s National Book Town, a mecca for book lovers!
Wigtown also has the largest local Nature Reserve in the UK with hundreds of bird species to be seen from a specially
built bird hide looking out over the mud flats.
Also
close by is the Galloway Forest, Britain’s largest forest park which features the world-class 7Stanes Mountain Biking
Trails. These have been described by champion riders as the best outside North America.
The Galloway Forest Park has also just been declared (2009) the first official dark skies
park outside the United States. Galloway has some of the lowest levels of light pollution in Europe due to its low population
density. That’s great news for stargazers, both amateur and professional, as, on a clear night, the dark skies are perfect
for viewing the stars.
There are also some excellent
fishing rivers in the immediate area as well as opportunities for game hunting.
